Another LSU Football coaching rumor that probably isn’t happening
By Zach Ragan
There are so many LSU football coaching search rumors floating around right now that it’s tough to keep track of them all.
One of the rumors that’s been floating around a bit this week is that Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley could be Ed Orgeron’s replacement in Baton Rouge.
The Athletic’s Brody Miller addressed the Riley rumors in his weekly mailbag.
When The Athletic jumps on a rumor, it adds some legitimacy.
But if you’re a Tigers fan who’s hoping Riley leaves Oklahoma for LSU, I’ve got some bad news for you.
Lincoln Riley probably won’t be the next LSU Football head coach
You never say never in a coaching search, but it’s really hard for me to see Riley leaving Norman for Baton Rouge.
For starters, the Sooners are moving to the SEC in a couple of years. So if Riley is deadset on coaching in the SEC, he’ll get his chance soon enough.
The bigger reason, though, that I think Riley won’t be at LSU next season is because I believe his long-term future is in the NFL.
Riley has it made right now at Oklahoma. The sooner are routinely in the College Football Playoff picture. There’s no reason to leave that job for another college job with more pressure (and there would definitely be more pressure to win at LSU).
If Riley leaves Oklahoma, I think it’ll be for an NFL job. There will be a team hoping to hire the next Kliff Kingsbury that will offer Riley an insane amount of money.
I think Riley could immediately compete for championships at LSU. But unfortunately for the Tigers, I just can’t see it happening.
