LSU Football: The 5 best moments of the Ed Orgeron era
By Zach Ragan
LSU football hired Brian Kelly this week to serve as the program’s new head coach.
That means the Ed Orgeron in Baton Rouge era is officially over.
It was time for the Tigers to move on from Coach O. The last two seasons didn’t meet the standard of LSU football. And there was little indication that things were going to improve in 2022 if Orgeron was retained.
But while it was the right move to move on from Orgeron, it was still bittersweet.
There were a lot of great moments with Orgeron over the last five years. Unforgettable moments.
Here are five of the most memorable moments from the Coach O era.
5. The rain game at Neyland in 2017
The 2017 season — Orgeron’s first season as LSU’s full-time head coach — got off to a tough start for the Tigers.
LSU started the season 3-2 with a blowout loss to Mississippi State and a home loss to Troy.
After the loss to Troy, plenty of national college football analysts were suggesting that LSU had made a major mistake by hiring Orgeron.
The Tigers, however, quickly righted the ship. LSU beat Florida in Gainesville the week after losing to Troy. And then they knocked off No. 10 Auburn.
LSU only lost two games the rest of the season after losing to Troy (they lost to No. 1 Alabama and, ironically, a Brian Kelly-led Notre Dame team in the Citrus Bowl).
The most memorable moment of the season had to be a game in Knoxville in late November against the Tennessee Volunteers.
LSU easily won the game, despite an insane downpour just after the half. Surprisingly, the two teams took the field. It was so bad that you could barely see the game on television.
What a wild, but incredibly fun, moment.
