LSU Football: How Brian Kelly is avoiding a potential huge misstep at LSU
By Zach Ragan
New LSU football head coach Brian Kelly is wisely avoiding a potential huge misstep in his first days/week in Baton Rouge.
And it has to do with recruiting — aka the lifeblood of any college football program.
Kelly made it clear during his introductory press conference that one of his first orders of business at LSU is to focus on the players who are currently committed to the Tigers.
“We certainly want to take care of the recruiting and make sure that all the young men that have made their commitments here, that they know where they stand,” said Kelly when he was introduced as LSU’s new head coach (via 247Sports).
Brian Kelly isn’t ruining recruiting relationships
The absolute worst thing that Kelly could do right now would be to tell a current LSU commit that their offer isn’t good anymore.
I’m sure there are players in the Tigers’ 2022 class that don’t completely fit Kelly’s vision. But that’s a hard thing to tell a 17-18-year-old kid that’s excited about playing for LSU.
Kelly could potentially ruin recruiting relationships with high schools if he pulled an offer from a kid.
So instead of pulling offers, Kelly is taking the complete opposite approach — he’s making sure that all 13 commits know they’re wanted in Baton Rouge.
This is a great approach by Kelly. He knows that building relationships and a good reputation are extremely important in recruiting. This might seem like a small thing that Kelly is doing, but I promise that it will be a big deal on the recruiting trail.
This is the first step in Kelly building trust in Louisiana and the surrounding areas. So far, he’s off to a great start.
