LSU football is set to return to a bowl game in 2021 after finishing the season with a 6-6 record.

The Tigers didn’t play in a bowl game in 2020, despite finishing 5-5, due to a self-imposed bowl ban last season.

According to 247Sports, the latest bowl game prediction for LSU is the Texas Bowl in Houston on January 4.

The projected opponent for LSU is the Kansas State Wildcats.

Kansas State finished the 2021 regular-season record with a 7-5 record.

LSU last played in the Texas Bowl in 2015 when they beat Texas Tech 56-27.

Kansas State last played in Texas Bowl in 2016, a 33-28 win against Texas A&M.

This would be the second meeting between Kansas State and LSU if this matchup comes to fruition. The Tigers beat the Wildcats 21-0 in Baton Rouge in 1980.

Will Brian Kelly coach LSU football in a bowl game?

The other big question surrounding LSU’s bowl game appearance is whether or not new Tigers head coach Brian Kelly will coach the team.

Kelly said last week that he hasn’t talked to LSU leadership yet about whether or not he’ll coach in the bowl game.

This will likely have a lot to do with which staff hires have been made and which coaches are retained.

I think Kelly would be wise to hit the ground running with the Tigers. If he can quickly get a staff in place, he could go ahead and start building his new culture at LSU. That’s far more important than actually winning the bowl game.

Sure, winning the bowl game would be nice. But the focus needs to be on the long-term health of the program.
