New LSU football head coach Brian Kelly is in a tough spot when it comes to recruiting.

Kelly only has a couple of weeks to recruit players who will be signing during the early signing period later this month.

That should be sufficient when it comes to players already committed to the Tigers.

But when it comes to uncommitted recruits, that could be problematic. Two weeks isn’t enough time to build a solid relationship with a recruit.

Fortunately for Kelly and the Tigers, one of LSU’s top 2022 recruiting targets is planning to wait until February to sign.

2022 five-star safety Jacoby Mathews, a former Tigers commit, won’t sign during the early signing period later this month. That should give Kelly and LSU plenty of time to make an impact on the Ponchatoula, LA native.

Mathews spoke to 247Sports this week about his first conversation with Kelly. And he had plenty of positive things to say.

“He (Kelly) wants to build a relationship and he has made it clear that he wants me in Purple and Gold,” said Mathews to 247Sports.

“I think he’s a real genuine man. You know he’s kind of older, but he’s nice and wants to win,” added Mathews.

If Mathews was signing in December, I’d say the Tigers would have no shot. But since he’s waiting, I think LSU is very much in this. It’s still too early to make a prediction, but I feel good about Kelly winning this battle.

Mathews, 6-foot-2/193 lbs, is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 3 safety in the country and the No. 2 player in Louisiana.
