LSU football lost a couple of key players to the transfer portal on Tuesday.

Sophomore quarterback Max Johnson tweeted on Tuesday evening that he’s transferring from LSU. That’s a move that was somewhat expected.

(Johnson’s brother, four-star tight end Jake Johnson, also decommitted from the Tigers on Tuesday.)

247Sports reported on Tuesday that wide receiver Deion Smith is also expected to enter the transfer portal.

Smith signed with LSU during the 2021 recruiting cycle. He played in six games for the Tigers this season, catching 11 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns.

Where the former LSU football WR will likely land

There’s really only one logical transfer destination for Smith.

Ole Miss with Lane Kiffin.

Smith is a Mississippi native who was rated as the No. 1 player in Mississippi.

With a new coach in town, it only makes sense that Smith would want to return closer to home while also playing for a team that won 10 games in 2021.

It’ll be worth keeping an eye on Max Johnson and Ole Miss, too. Kiffin is going to need a new quarterback with Matt Corral heading to the NFL. And he’ll probably look to the transfer portal for that quarterback.

Johnson, a Georgia native who led LSU to a win against Ole Miss in 2020, would make sense for the Rebels.

If that’s the case, then Jake Johnson will likely follow his brother to Oxford.

It would also mean that LSU would play against a former Tigers quarterback for the second straight season (LSU played against former Tiger TJ Finley at Auburn this season).

Next. Brian Kelly just gets it. dark

There will probably be some more transfer portal action in the coming days/weeks. That’s to be expected with a coaching change. Don’t panic. New Tigers head coach Brian Kelly has this under control.
