LSU football announced on Tuesday that Kansas City Chiefs linebackers coach Matt House will serve as the program’s defensive coordinator in 2022.

House has been with the Chiefs since the 2019 season. He reportedly turned down defensive coordinator job offers from the Tennessee Volunteers and the Auburn Tigers before the 2021 season.

Prior to his time in Kansas City, House served as the defensive coordinator at Kentucky for two seasons under Marks Stoops. He also has defensive coordinator experience at Pittsburgh and FIU.

House is a Michigan State graduate.

When will Matt House join LSU football?

When I heard that House was new Tigers head coach Brian Kelly’s top target for the defensive coordinator job at LSU, I was a bit skeptical. I wasn’t sure House would leave the NFL for the college game. I even thought he might be up for a defensive coordinator job in the NFL.

Kelly, however, was able to get his man. As far as I can tell, the only other person that Kelly offered the job to was Marcus Freeman, who ended up replacing Kelly as the head coach at Notre Dame.

So when will House land in Baton Rouge?

According to a statement released on Tuesday, House is planning to finish the 2021 season with the Chiefs.

“I leave behind so many special people in Kansas City that will be lifelong friends,” said House in a release from LSU. “It is not over just yet though and we will finish this season strong with the Chiefs. My wife, Jessi, our family, and I look forward to joining the LSU family soon.”

The Chiefs could play deep into the playoffs. And if they reach the Super Bowl, it’s hard to imagine House leaving town. House will undoubtedly need to do some recruiting for the Tigers as National Signing Day approaches in February. That means House will likely be pulling double duty.

It could be a busy couple of months for House. But once the NFL season is over for the Chiefs, it should be smooth sailing for LSU’s new defensive coordinator.
