The best thing Brad Davis said after LSU football’s loss in Texas Bowl
By Zach Ragan
When Brad Davis was hired last summer as LSU football‘s offensive line coach, he probably didn’t think he’d be coaching the Tigers in a bowl game.
Of course, college football is often unpredictable.
Davis was hired by Ed Orgeron after spring practice when the program moved on from James Cregg (due to recruiting violations committed by Cregg).
After a rough start to the 2021 season, Orgeron and the Tigers agreed to part ways in October. Coach O, however, stayed on through the end of the season, but he didn’t coach in the bowl game. That left Davis as the interim head coach to bridge the gap between Orgeron and new head coach Brian Kelly.
Davis was put in an extremely tough spot for the bowl game. LSU had less than 40 scholarship players available for the Texas Bowl against Kansas State (and no scholarship quarterbacks).
Despite this, Davis and LSU never considered pulling out of the bowl game.
The best thing LSU football interim head coach Brad Davis said after loss in Texas Bowl
After LSU lost to Kansas State on Tuesday night, Davis was asked about refusing to pull out of the bowl game (due to lack of players).
According to Davis, it was never a consideration.
Here’s what Davis had to say (via 247Sports):
"We don’t back down from a challenge. That isn’t who we are or what we stand for at LSU. We were going to play this game. It’s important for us. Every opportunity we get to compete, every opportunity we get to go represent our brand, we’re going to take advantage of it. There was never a thought in our mind of not competing or playing. We expected to win this game."
How can you not love that approach from Davis?!?!
LSU wasn’t playing with a full deck against Kansas State. Everyone knew the Tigers’ depth was severely depleted. And most reasonable fans knew a win was unlikely.
But that didn’t matter to Davis and the LSU players — like Davis said, they don’t back down from a challenge.
LSU fans should love that Kelly is retaining Davis as the Tigers’ offensive line coach. This type of attitude is what SEC football is all about.
