LSU Football: Comment from 4-star recruit about Florida Gators is puzzling
By Zach Ragan
LSU football is one of several marquee programs pursuing 2022 four-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews.
Mathews, 6-foot-2/193 lbs from Ponchatoula, LA, is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 3 safety in the country and the No. 2 player in Louisiana. He’s also rated as the No. 36 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class, which means he’s very close to being considered a five-star player.
The Tigers actually held a commitment from Mathews at one point.
Mathews committed to LSU last April, but he decommitted from the Tigers in late July after Texas A&M started showing heavy interest.
LSU, however, is still in the mix to land Mathews. The Tigers are set to receive a visit next weekend from Mathews, ahead of National Signing Day on February 2.
Florida appears to be the main threat to swipe Mathews out of Louisiana.
Comment from LSU football recruiting target Jacoby Mathews is puzzling
Mathews checked out Florida this week and spoke to 247Sports about his visit.
And a comment he made was quite puzzling.
Mathews spoke highly of the Louisiana connections that Billy Napier has on his Gators staff (including former LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond).
“Really the whole Louisiana staff they have is a big thing,” explained Mathews to 247Sports. “They are more tied in with Louisiana players and they know we were brought up through tough times. They know how to work with their players the most.”
If Mathews is looking for Louisiana connections, then he should look no further than LSU!
Brian Kelly may not be from Louisiana, but he has made sure his staff has plenty of Louisiana natives, including running backs coach Frank Wilson, offensive line coach Brad Davis, and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton.
Mathews doesn’t need to settle for a Louisiana vibe in another SEC program — LSU badly wants him in Baton Rouge.
The Tigers will have their chance to seal the deal with Mathews this weekend. Maybe the visit to LSU will make Mathews realize he doesn’t need to look for a little bit of Louisiana in Gainesville.
