LSU football could use some depth at the defensive back position in 2022.

Especially with players like Derek Stingley (NFL draft), Eli Ricks (transfer to Alabama), Cordale Flott (NFL draft), and Dwight McGlothern (transfer to Arkansas) moving on from Baton Rouge.

The Tigers have added a couple of key defensive backs via the transfer portal in Greg Brooks (Arkansas), Joe Foucha (Arkansas), and Mehki Garner (ULL). But some more depth would still be nice (you can never have too much defensive depth in the SEC).

Fortunately for LSU, it looks like another transfer defensive back could be on the way soon.

LSU Football poised to add cornerback via NCAA transfer portal

According to 247Sports’ Shea Dixon, the Tigers are in the driver’s seat for Oklahoma State transfer cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse.

“The buzz behind the scenes has been pointing towards the Tigers here as we get closer to the final date to add courses for the spring semester,” said Dixon on Tuesday.

Bernard-Converse is a former three-star recruit who signed with Oklahoma State during the 2018 recruiting cycle.

Signing with LSU seems like an obvious choice for the Shreveport, LA native.

As an aside, I think a player like Bernard-Converse represents a new way that LSU needs to recruit high school players from Louisiana. There are obviously a lot of players in Louisiana that are going to sign with other programs — typically the lower-rated players. Some of those players, however, are going to outperform their ranking.

The Tigers need to make sure they’re building solid relationships across the state with players — even if they don’t plan on signing them. You never know when they’ll have a shot at one of those players down the road thanks to the transfer portal.
