LSU football currently has the No. 19 ranked 2022 recruiting class in the country.

That’s not great by LSU standards. This is a program that’s accustomed to finishing with top five or at least top 10 recruiting classes.

Fortunately for the Tigers, there are several talented 2022 uncommitted recruits out there who could be signing with LSU.

One of those recruits is four-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews.

LSU football should be feeling good about landing Jacoby Mathews

Mathews, 6-foot-2/193 lbs from Ponchatoula, LA, is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 safety in the country and the No. 3 player in Louisiana. He’s also rated as the No. 38 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

The Louisiana native was committed to LSU at one point, but he decommitted last summer.

Despite that decommitment, the Tigers are in a good spot for the talented defensive back.

LSU is getting Mathews’ final visit this weekend before National Signing Day next week.

That final visit comes on the heels of Tigers head coach Brian Kelly going on an in-home visit with Mathews.

And that visit reportedly went VERY well.

247Sports’ Shea Dixon reported on Friday that Mathews and Kelly really hit it off this week.

Dixon said Mathews really liked meeting Kelly and that the two had an “instant vibe” going.

dark. Next. Joe Burrow card just sold for an insane price

This is a recruiting battle that LSU desperately needs to win. They really want Mathews in Baton Rouge and they don’t want to see him go to an SEC West rival (Texas A&M) or an SEC crossover rival (Florida).

The battle for Mathews is extremely close right now. But ultimately, I think the Tigers getting the final visit will be what leads Mathews to sign with LSU.
