New LSU football head coach Brian Kelly has done a good job of addressing roster needs this offseason by utilizing the NCAA transfer portal.

The Tigers lost several key players to the portal after the season (cornerback Eli Ricks to Alabama was probably the biggest loss), but they’ve also added several key players.

So far this offseason, LSU has added 12 players to the roster via the transfer portal.

Those 12 players combined with the Tigers’ 15 signees give LSU 27 new players for the 2022 season.

And they likely aren’t done adding players.

LSU football still has room to add additional transfers

The Tigers still have some room to add more players from the transfer portal.

Julie Boudwin, who covers LSU for Rivals.com, reported this weekend that the Tigers have five scholarships remaining.

According to Boudwin, those scholarships don’t roll over. That means they have to be used before fall.

The expectation is that LSU will wait until after spring practice — when transfer portal movement picks up — to add more players. That will also give the Tigers a chance to address specific areas if any more LSU players decide to leave.

And as Boudwin noted, the Tigers could always choose to put a walk-on on scholarship if they don’t find enough players in the portal that they really like.

Kelly has done a great job of rebuilding LSU’s roster this winter.

But the job isn’t done yet.

Fortunately for Kelly, he has some roster flexibility that he can use this summer to make further improvements to the Tigers’ already solid core.

Kelly should have this team ready to make some serious noise in the SEC West by the time the 2022 season rolls around.
