Believe it or not, someone went and did it.

Right now, people are out there floating the idea of hiring LSU, NBA, Hollywood, and Papa John’s (Shaqaroni anyone?) legend, Shaquille O’Neal as the next head coach of the LSU’s men’s basketball team.

It may sound like a lark, but at least some people are taking it seriously, and there’s no denying that the idea has its charm.

I first got wind of it on Twitter:

I must concede that the idea of Shaq as a college basketball coach does make some sense. After all, no one could possibly question Shaq’s love for LSU or his potential as a recruiter.

However, there’s a lot more to coaching than loving one’s team and scooping up five-star talent with a winning smile, super-sized charm, and hands the size of a Volkswagon.

How would Coach Shaq handle this team as it prepares to face Iowa State?

How would Coach Shaq prepare his teams for the grind of the SEC regular season?

Who would he hire as his assistants?

The truth is that we have no idea as to how to even begin answering these questions because Shaq has as much NCAA Division I coaching experience as do: zip. On the other hand, I can guarantee that Shaq would get players’ attention, and he is known for providing coach-like analysis of players on TV.

Nonetheless, I doubt LSU athletic director Scott Woodward has any intention of even considering an untested coach to take the reins of one of the nation’s premier basketball programs, even one with the notoriety and charisma of Shaq.

But that’s just my opinion. You should share yours.

There’s currently a poll on Death Valley Voice’s Twitter account about who should be LSU’s next head basketball coach. Swing by and cast your vote:
