The LSU Tigers will head to Las Vegas and meet a familiar foe to open the 2024 season. Fans now know the details of the marquee kickoff game.

On Wednesday, ESPN announced the details regarding the LSU Tigers vs. USC Trojans in the 2024 Vegas Kickoff Classic. The meeting will occur at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, September 1, at 6:30 pm PT.

The Vegas Kickoff Classic marks LSU’s first game against Lincoln Riley since the 2019 Peach Bowl. Most Tigers fans recall the 63-28 thrashing of the Riley-led Oklahoma Sooners. But, of course, much has changed since then, including Riley bolting Norman for Los Angeles after the 2021 season.

Ironically, the 2021 rumor mill frequently linked Lincoln Riley to the LSU Tigers. However, Riley accepted the USC job, followed by Brian Kelly’s decision to leave Notre Dame for Death Valley. The coaches’ moves arguably shifted the college football paradigm.

The LSU Tigers finished 10-4 in Kelly’s first season, including a win over Alabama and a trip to the SEC Championship Game. Lincoln Riley experienced similar success in his first season on the West Coast. Riley’s Trojans finished 11-3, including ranked wins over UCLA and Notre Dame and a Pac-12 Championship Game appearance.

The early success of both coaches with their new programs generates a lot of Vegas Kickoff Classic anticipation. Moreover, organizers are excited to see the game return for a 2nd edition. The inaugural Vegas Kickoff Classic featured BYU defeating Arizona to open the 2021 season.

The LSU Tigers and USC Trojans have only played twice in the history of both programs. In 1984, LSU beat USC 23-3 in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Before then, the No.1-ranked Trojans edged LSU 17-12 at Tiger Stadium.

In addition to playing USC in 2024, LSU meets UCLA at Tiger Stadium. Interestingly enough, USC and UCLA will transition to the Big 10 ahead of the 2024 season. 2024 also marks the beginning of the SEC’s 10-year mega-contract with ESPN.
