LSU baseball: Tigers capture crucial series win against No. 10 Tennessee
Game Three: LSU Tigers struggle; unable to secure the sweep
After securing the series win Friday night, the LSU Tigers struggled to secure the sweep in game three. The Vols came out in the first inning and scored six runs before the Tigers even stepped in the box. LSU replaced starting pitcher Thatcher Hurd with Riley Cooper before he could record a single out. In the second inning, Tennessee continued to put the pressure on, crossing four more runners via two RBI doubles and an RBI single.
Despite being down 10-0 through an inning and a half, the Tigers didn’t quit fighting. Cooper kept the Tennessee bats at bay long enough for LSU to mount a small comeback.
The LSU Tigers plated one run in the second and third frames. After loading the bases in the fourth, Tre’ Morgan and Dylan Crews hit back-to-back two RBI base knocks to cut into the deficit, 10-6.
Unfortunately, the Bayou Bengals could only muster one more run on the afternoon, as they fell 14-7 in game three of the series.
The 14-7 loss didn’t stop three LSU players from recording 3+ hits. Tre’ Morgan went 3-for-6 from the plate, including a double and two RBIs, while Jared Jones went 3-for-5 with a double. In addition, Dylan Crews improved his hitting streak to 26 games as he went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a double.
Although the LSU Tigers couldn’t pull off the sweep of Tennessee, they showed why they are the best team in college baseball. As long as they can continue to win big series, the Tigers will be in a prime position to bring the trophy home.
