No. 6 – Derrius Guice, RB

Selected 59th overall by the Washington ‘R-words’ in the 2018 NFL Draft

Derrius Guice is the only 2nd round NFL Draft pick to make our list, but he’s arguably one of the most talented. Unfortunately, Guice’s story is one of talent outweighed by injuries and poor choices.

Guice was outstanding in his sophomore and junior seasons with the LSU Tigers. He ran for 1,387 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2016 and 1,251 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2017. His All-SEC Team honors caught the ire of NFL teams during the 2018 pre-draft processes. In some LSU circles, fans speculated Guice was a better NFL prospect than Leonard Fournette.

Five NFL teams selected a running back before Washington picked Guice in the 2nd round. Draft analysts said off-field concerns caused the LSU alum to slip down draft boards. Regardless, Washington was an excellent fit for Guice, given their need for a feature running back and style of offense.

Unfortunately, Guice tore his ACL during Washington’s first preseason game of the 2018 season. His injury luck did not improve in 2019, as evidenced by a torn meniscus in Week 1 versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Then, Guice sprained his MCL in December of the same year.

What’s worse is Guice’s off-field concerns manifested into reality after his arrest for domestic violence in August 2020. Washington released the running back shortly after. He was suspended for six games in the 2021 season but not offered a contract by any NFL teams.

Guice signed with the Vegas Knight Hawks of the Indoor Football League in February 2023. He appeared on the team’s roster as of March, but is not currently listed.
