When does the 2023 LSU football season start?

We’re a little more than three months from the return of LSU football. So, fans wondering when the new Tigers season begins, look no further.

The 2023 LSU football season begins on Sunday, September 3rd, with a game against Florida State in Orlando. Moreover, the non-conference matchup is slated for prime time television on ABC at 6:30 pm CT.

The LSU vs. Florida State kickoff game is the 2nd leg of a home-and-home agreement between the programs. Most LSU football fans will recall that the Tigers and Seminoles opened the 2022 college season at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. This time around, Camping World Stadium in central Florida will host.

The 2023 version of LSU vs. Florida State is a marquee game that will impact early college football rankings. ESPN’s preseason Top 25 rankings list the Tigers as No. 4 and the Seminoles as No. 14.

We think LSU, as the preseason No. 4, is a tad overzealous. Conversely, Florida State appears better than the No. 14. team. Regardless, both programs are top 10 caliber and expect to compete for their conference’s championship in 2023. Jayden Daniels and Jordan Travis also come up in much early Heisman Trophy candidate talk. A big opening game from either quarterback will see them emerge as early award favorites.

Florida State edged LSU 24-23 in last year’s kickoff game. Some consider the game a ‘thriller,’ but few of us wearing purple and gold shared such emotion.’ The Tigers were incredibly sloppy in Brian Kelly’s first game as LSU football head coach. Quarterback Jayden Daniels was also inconsistent in leading the offense, mainly because the Tigers’ offensive line was a sieve.

Recalling the 2022 game triggers all sorts of unpleasant emotions. However, LSU figured a lot out as their season progressed and (the Tennessee game aside) overachieved in Kelly’s first season.

We expect LSU to give Florida State a much better game in 2023 because the Tigers have continuity that was missing a year ago. Such is not to imply the Seminoles will roll over. However, we like LSU football to avenge their 2022 loss and win a close one against the Noles
