LSU football: Unusual, non-conference opponents in 2023
vs. Army West Point Black Knights on October 21
LSU football will play another out-of-conference game on October 21st when they take on Army West Point. The two schools have played just once, back in 1931, a game Army won 20-0 in West Point, New York.
Few are more excited for the matchup than former West Point graduate and current Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
“Both schools have helped shape who I am today, and it will be exciting to see them face off in Tiger Stadium,” Edwards said. “As for who I’ll be rooting for, I can guarantee you I’ll be supporting the winning team regardless of the outcome.”
Army finished last season 6-6 after a 20-17 double overtime thriller against the Navy Midshipmen in their annual showdown.

2023 is a different beast for Army West Point, who is playing one of their most rigid schedules in recent memory. They get LSU (SEC), Syracuse (ACC), Boston College (ACC), and Troy (12-2 last season). Their opponents had an overall record of 88-65 and a .575 winning percentage in 2023.
Syracuse, Boston College, and Troy all come before the October 21st matchup with the Tigers. Suffice it to say, LSU football will have a good idea of how good Army is and how to game plan for them before their meeting in Death Valley.
Army allowed just five of their 12 opponents in 2022 to score more than 20 points. They play disciplined on defense but will be without standout edge rusher Andre Carter as he left for the NFL following the 2022 season.
LSU has not played any of the other service academies in football.
