LSU football vs. Stanford football

Overall record: 0-1

First meeting: Dec. 31, 1977

Last meeting: Dec. 31, 1977

Last score: 24-14

Sadly, LSU football has never beaten the Stanford Cardinal on a football field.

LSU’s only matchup with Stanford occurred in the 1977 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. The Tigers rode running back Charles Alexander’s legs and jumped out to a 14-10 lead. However, the Bill Walsh-led Cardinal stormed back through the air.

LSU was shut out in the 2nd half, allowing Stanford to claim the 44th annual Sun Bowl win.

Regardless, Alexander set a bowl game record with 197 yards and was named the game’s most valuable player. Conversely, the Cardinal racked up 269 passing yards, including three touchdown passes by quarterback Guy Benjamin.

It is tough to imagine LSU football matching up against Stanford again soon. After some solid seasons under David Shaw, the Cardinal have spiraled down to Pac-12 bottom-feeders.

Additionally, their conference future is still being determined, with USC and UCLA slated to move to the Big Ten in 2024.
