LSU football makes uniform change for 2023 season
By John Fye
LSU football has one of the most iconic college football uniforms. However, the purple and gold-clad Tigers will look slightly different in 2023.
Photos of players posted to their social media accounts have exposed a change to the LSU football uniform. Credit to LSU Uni-Tracker for noticing the Tigers are dressing their players in Nike’s Vapor F.U.S.E. jersey template.
The most noticeable change in LSU’s 2023 jersey is the reinforced collar. Nike added more material to the collar for unknown reasons. One might assume the collar design mitigates jersey pulling and stretching when players are engaged with opponents. However, the F.U.S.E. collar is likely for aesthetics.
Recently, LSU football jerseys featured the Nike Vapor Untouchable template. Many fans will recall such a change in 2017 when the Tigers’ shoulder stripes changed to half-length. The Nike Vapor Untouchable template also ushered in the return of the “58 font” for jersey numbers.
LSU Uni-Tracker compared the Vapor Untouchable and Vapor F.U.S.E. templates. There are more visible panels in Nike’s latest football jersey style. Also, the front and back panel material seems lighter and features mesh-like holes.
Thankfully, the design of the LSU football uniform does not change with the F.U.S.E. template. Such is an example of, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
Nevertheless, Nike altered the F.U.S.E. template to accommodate the Tigers’ shoulder stripes design. LSU’s shoulder panels are a straight cut. Such differs from the angled hem of the NFL’s F.U.S.E. templates.
Uni-watch.com’s Paul Lukas noted that Nike experimented with the Vapor F.U.S.E. template circa 2020. Also, the Georgia Bulldogs and Ohio State Buckeyes were dressed in F.U.S.E. jerseys during last season’s College Football Playoff.
Perhaps, the updated jersey template will result in LSU football passing the Vapor Untouchable jerseys to the recruiting department. Something that has bothered me for a long time is that LSU dresses many football recruits in outdated jerseys during their official visits to Baton Rouge.
LSU’s outdated jerseys are easy to spot because they feature wrap-around shoulder stripes and generic block numerals. Many fans prefer LSU’s old jersey style over their current. I like what the Tigers wear now and want to see the nation’s top recruits showing it off during their visits.
