LSU football takes down No. 1 Florida
Game: LSU Tigers vs. Florida Gators
Date: October 11, 1997
Location: Baton Rouge, La.
Final Score: 28-21
LSU football defeated a No. 1 team for the first time in history on October 11, 1997.
Ranked No. 14 at kickoff, the Tigers fed off a raucous Death Valley crowd and ended the night tearing down the goalposts.
Being two-touchdown underdogs did not phase LSU. The Tigers’ defense intercepted Gators quarterback Doug Johnson four times. On offense, quarterback Herb Tyler and running back Kevin Faulk combined for 140 yards rushing. Such was significant considering the LSU football lost Cecil Collins to a broken leg the previous week.
The LSU football win snapped Florida’s 25-game SEC winning streak. It was also Steve Spurrier’s first loss to the Tigers as a player and coach.

LSU finished their 1997 season with a 9-3 record and Independence Bowl win over Notre Dame.
