LSU football edges Georgia in the final minutes

Game: LSU Tigers vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Date: September 20, 2003

Location: Baton Rouge, La.

Final Score: 17-10

LSU football edged the Georgia Bulldogs in the final moments of a game many consider one of Death Valley’s best.

The stakes were high for an early-season SEC matchup between the conference championship contenders. The LSU football and Georgia defenses lived up to the billing and played stubborn football for most of all four quarters.

LSU was led by head coach Nick Saban and held a 7-3 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs finally mustered some offense and tied the game with a screen pass to Tyson Browning that went 93 yards for a touchdown.

Thankfully, LSU’s Devery Henderson returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards to set up the Tigers’ final offensive push. Six plays later, LSU quarterback Matt Mauck found receiver Skyler Green for a 34-yard touchdown pass that moved the score to 17-10.

LSU cornerback Corey Webster sealed the win with an interception on Georgia’s final drive.
The teams met again in the 2003 SEC Championship Game. But, of course, LSU football won that contest on their way to a national championship.
