LSU football has much talent in the trenches for 2023. The football writers know this, given their Outland Trophy Watch List.

On Tuesday, three LSU football linemen were named to the 2023 Outland Trophy Watch List. Offensive tackles Will Campbell and Emery Jones Jr. and defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo appear on the list of 91 returning interior lineman standouts released by the Football Writers Association of America.

At the end of each season, the Outland Trophy recognizes college football’s best returning interior lineman. Indeed, the trophy is unique because it considers offensive and defensive linemen.

Defensive tackle Jacquelin Roy was the only LSU football member to appear on the 2022 Outland Trophy Watch List. As such, including three Tigers on the 2023 watch list indicates significant expectations down in Death Valley.

Will Campbell and Emery Jones are the unsung heroes of the 2022 LSU football season. Both players were catapulted into starting roles as true freshman and did not let the Tigers down.

LSU football experienced early-season offensive line woes in 2022. However, Campbell and Jones matured quickly and emerged as pillars of the Tigers’ 10-win season. Their best game was arguably against Alabama, where they throttled EDGE rushers, Will Anderson Jr. and Dallas Turner.

Mekhi Wingo is entering his junior season in Baton Rouge with All-American hype. The 295-pounder totaled 47 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble in 2022. Suffice it to say, Wingo immediately impact the LSU football defense after transferring from Missouri.

The Outland Trophy winner will be announced in December during the Home Depot College Football Awards show on ESPN. The trophy will be formally presented to the recipient at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner in Omaha on January 10th.

The Outland Trophy is named after John H. Outland, one of the few college football players to earn All-American honors playing two positions.
