LSU football was back on the field Thursday for the start of fall camp. As such, there is much we’re paying attention to as the Tigers prepare for the new season.

Following their first fall practice, Brian Kelly campaigned to the media for realistic expectations regarding the 2023 LSU football team. The head coach explained that expecting the Tigers to win every game might be unrealistic. However, given the prior season, he expects incremental improvements from his players.

Kelly broke his program’s first practice into nine periods that included many moving parts. LSU football units spent time in and outside doors to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat.

Matthew Brune and Shea Dixon witnessed most of the Tigers’ first practice, noting a lot of one-on-one drills, including the offensive line battling the defensive line. Moreover, the Tigers engaged in a seven-on-seven competition.

John Emery Jr. was the only player missing from practice. However, Kelly delivered some excellent news regarding the running back’s status with the team.

Kelly spoke highly of Emery and announced that the 5th-year senior will return to the program tomorrow. Emery was serving a soft suspension while getting his academics up to par. Thankfully, Emery has completed his coursework (an internship) and will return to practices for the second day of fall camp.

It was nice to see Alabama transfer receiver Aaron Anderson on the field after he missed the entire spring. Kelly commented that coaches took things easy with Anderson on the day but expected more intensity and a more significant role for the Freshman (RS) in the Tigers’ offense.

Ultimately, there were no surprises from the first day of LSU football fall practice.

Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels was filmed throwing to receivers after practice ended. The extra work is undoubtedly an effort to improve timing and rapport within the LSU passing attack.

Daniels’ initiative is what fans want to see from a starting quarterback.
