The preseason 2023 LSU Football hype is massive. On Friday, the Walter Camp Award Watch List added to the ballyhoo by recognizing a pair of star Tigers.

Each season, the Walter Camp Award recognizes the American college football player of the year. The award’s 2023 preseason watch list includes the two most critical players in Baton Rouge, Jayden Daniels, and Harold Perkins Jr.

Daniels and Perkins are two of the 45 players on the Walter Camp 2023 Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams is the reigning award winner and favorite to repeat in 2023. However, there is potential for Jayden Daniels to unseat Williams as the nation’s top college quarterback. This task requires the Tigers’ signal-caller to sling the ball downfield more while providing a similar impact with his legs this season.

Also, Daniels must lead LSU Football to the program’s second College Football Playoff appearance and compete for a national title.

Conversely, sophomore linebacker Harold Perkins has the potential for a record-setting season worthy of Walter Camp Award honors. Perkins emerged as a star defender in 2022 while playing EDGE. LSU Football is moving the New Orleans native to inside linebacker, where we project his involvement in more plays this season.

Coincidentally, the last defensive player to win the Walter Camp Award was Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o. Current LSU Football head coach Brian Kelly led the Fighting Irish back then.

The Walter Camp Award winner is decided upon by the 133 FBS head coaches and sports information directors. The Walter Camp Award Foundation will announce ten semi-finalists in mid-November. Moreover, the Camp Award winner will be announced during the ESPN College Football Awards Show in December.

Joe Burrow is the only LSU Football player to win the Walter Camp Award.

Another interesting anecdote is that OJ Simpson won the first Walter Camp Award in 1967. The former USC running back won the award again in 1968.
