An indicator of a college football powerhouse program is how many players progress to the NFL. LSU Football remains a leader in such to start the season.

43 former LSU Football players are active on NFL rosters to begin the new season. Only three college programs have more active alums on NFL rosters than the Tigers. Alabama leads all of college football with 57 players, followed by Georgia (49) and Ohio State (43).

There are 61 former LSU Tigers in the NFL if we count practice squad players.

The number of former LSU Football players in the NFL is outstanding for Baton Rouge. NIL and the transfer portal have improved the playing field among college football’s power five programs. However, a college football program’s track record of putting players into the NFL remains a significant recruiting advantage.

The quality of players on NFL rosters by way of Baton Rouge is arguably more important than the quantity. Indeed, quality NFL players make the most money, and as we know, money talks to young athletes.

Some of the NFL’s best players are Tigers alums, including Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Tyrann Mathieu, Jamal Adams, and Devin White. Such a group is worth much money. Burrow just signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid player in league history. New contracts are also coming for Jefferson and Chase, resetting the market for wide receivers.

Suffice it to say that ‘NFLSU’ is alive and well and available to the advantage of Brian Kelly’s staff. If the best high school players have pro football aspirations, they must consider playing college ball in Baton Rouge.

The number of former LSU Football players on active NFL rosters can rise anytime during the season. Running backs Leonard Fournette and Darrel Williams, receiver Jarvis Landry, and cornerback Greedy Williams are former Tigers and current free agents.

As such, we expect a couple to find another NFL job as injuries occur during the season.
