LSU Football trying to flip defensive lineman recruits committed to SEC programs
By John Fye
The LSU Football season is in Week 3, and the Tigers coaches are preparing for Mississippi State while simultaneously trying to flip some SEC commits.
Brian Kelly’s staff is working hard to add to the 2024 LSU Football recruiting class. The Tigers need to add a few more major high school recruits, and that means potentially poaching from other SEC programs.
Gabriel Reliford is a significant priority for LSU Football recruiters. The four-star recruit from Shreveport (La.) is playing outstanding high school football right now and has the attention of Kelly’s staff. Reliford and his family traveled to Baton Rouge last weekend and were on site to see the Tigers’ 72-10 win over Grambling.
Reliford committed to Texas A&M back in late June. The 6-2, 255-pounder continues to sing the Aggies’ praises, but we can’t help but wonder if that changes with a potential coaching change in College Station. We think anything short of competing for the SEC West title will result in Texas A&M exploring life after Jimbo Fisher as head coach.
Another consideration is that Reliford pledged to play college football for the Aggies before visiting Baton Rouge.
Flipping Reliford would be significant for LSU Football after the Tigers missed out on Colin Simmons and Dominick McKinley. Kelly’s program needs another 4-5 star interior defensive lineman for 2024 after signing none during the 2023 recruiting cycle.
Melvin Hills is another defensive lineman that LSU is working diligently to flip. Hills is a 3-star prospect from Lafayette (La.) who committed to Texas on July 12. According to the Bengal Tiger, LSU coaches will remain close to Hills during the season and leverage the current Tigers commitments and alums from Lafayette Christian Academy.
De’Myrion Johnson, a 3-star prospect from New Iberia (La.), is the only interior defensive lineman committed to the 2024 LSU Football recruiting class.
To remain ahead of attrition, Kelly must add no less than two defensive linemen during the 2024 recruiting cycle, including massaging the transfer portal.
