LSU Football is getting outraced by Ole Miss thru the first half; down 31-28
By John Fye
LSU Football looks outstanding on offense, but is down at halftime because of poor defensive play against the Ole Miss Rebels.
Ole Miss boasts one of the fastest offenses in the country and they’re currently killing the LSU defense. The Rebels hold a 31-28 lead through two quarters of play.
LSU Football fans on social media are unhappy with defensive coordinator Matt House. However, I think the problem the Tigers have on defense is a lack of talent beyond the defensive line. LSU’s linebackers are some of the weakest in coverage and the secondary is composed of transfer portal players from smaller programs.
As such, the Ole Miss skill position players are feasting on offense.
Lane Kiffin is utilizing tempo and switch routes routes that has LSU Football largely confused and out of position. Indeed, the Rebels’ receivers are often wide open. Kiffin is also keeping quarterback Jaxson Dart on the move thus, preventing LSU’s interior defensive line from making an impact.
Offensively, LSU Football is moving the ball in chunks. Jayden Daniels is having an outstanding half despite an earlier drive during which the senior quarterback fumbled the ball away. Unfortunately, the highlight of the Ole Miss defender hit-sticking Daniels has gone viral on social media.
And no, it was not targeting.
Nevertheless, Daniels answered Ole Miss’s third touchdown with a pretty 20-yard pass that Brian Thomas Jr. reeled in for a touchdown. The SEC’s leading signal-caller then answered the Rebels’ fourth touchdown with a 55-yard run that set up a Logan Diggs touchdown.
Daniels and Thomas connected for another touchdown that capped a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive and brought the score to 28-21. He then threw an even prettier touchdown pass to Kyren Lacey inside of a minute remaining in the first half.
The LSU offense is getting better with each drive, but the Tigers’ defense needs to string together a couple of stops. How LSU Football adjusts during halftime will tell us much about their potential to compete for the SEC Championship.
Ole Miss played Alabama tough in the first half of their Week 4 game, but fell apart in the second half. Conversely, I’m reminded that Brian Kelly said during the preseason that he felt his team is a year away from competing for the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Was Kelly foreshadowing shadowing his team’s weakness that is the LSU defense?
