The Michigan Wolverines have had a tumultuous last few weeks, but some of the chaos could be dying down with the hiring of Kyle Whittingham. However, plenty of question marks still surround Wolverine QB Bryce Underwood.
Michael Van Buren has a lot to prove in the Texas Bowl for his 2026 audition
The former 5-star recruit infamously flipped from LSU to Michigan last November, and now that a new head coach is on board, LSU fans are wondering if Underwood is thinking of entering his name into the transfer portal. Lane Kiffin is known as a QB guru, so is there a possibility that Underwood could make his way back to Baton Rouge to play for Kiffin and the Tigers?
Bryce Underwood drops first hints about his future following Whittingham hire
On Saturday, Underwood dropped his first hint as to what his future could hold. Speaking with the media following a bowl game practice, Underwood stated that he will address his future plans further on December 31 following Michigan's Cheez-It Citrus Bowl matchup against Texas.

While Underwood stated that he is excited to meet Whittingham, his return to Michigan could be up in the air. The transfer portal is set to open on January 2, and Whittingham will need to know if Underwood plans to return as he constructs the Wolverines' roster for 2026. LSU fans will undoubtedly be intrigued by Underwood's decision.
Underwood saw plenty of ups-and-downs during his highly-anticipated freshman season in 2025. The flashes were there, but the consistency wasn't. On the season, Underwood completed 61.1% of his passes for 2,229 yards and 9 touchdowns with 6 interceptions. He also ran for 323 yards and 5 touchdowns on 74 carries. Michigan hasn't brought in great WR talent, and their offensive coordinator position remains open as well.
A Kiffin/Underwood partnership in Baton Rouge could have great potential. Kiffin is great at developing elite QB talent, and could make for a perfect coach for Underwood. This season, Kiffin helped Trinidad Chambliss put together one of the best seasons from a QB in the entire country after transferring to Ole Miss from Division II Ferris State.
As Underwood continues to prepare to face Texas on December 31, Tiger fans will be locked in to his announcement regarding his future plans following the action. Kick-off between the Longhorns and Wolverines is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET on New Year's Eve.
