The LSU offense is still searching for some consistency in 2025. The offense has been just good enough to pickup some big wins and move to 3-0, but as the Tigers gear up for a tough upcoming SEC schedule, improvements are needed.
LSU is set to face FCS Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday before heading to Oxford to face Ole Miss on Sept. 27. Tune-ups are needed this week, as the offense needs to be ready to roll against the high-scoring Rebels. So far this season, Ole Miss ranks 11th in the country with 541.7 total yards of offense per game and have scored 134 points through three games. For comparison, LSU is averaging 345.7 total yards of offense per game and have managed just 60 total points.
As the Tigers look for a spark, Brian Kelly says that Chris Hilton Jr. needs to be more involved in the vertical passing game. Hilton is a fifth-year senior who has been with the LSU program since 2021. He's battled injuries in his career, but when healthy, he's been a reliable deep-ball threat who has come up with some big plays for the Tigers.
Chris Hilton Jr. could be in line for a bigger role in LSU's offense
The Zachary, LA native entered the 2025 season with high hopes of being more heavily involved in the Tiger passing attack. But so far, he has just one catch for one yard on three targets. His slow start on offense has been a cause of frustration for LSU fans. Joe Sloan's approach hasn't been effective, and big plays have been hard to come by for the Tigers - especially through the air.
Hilton's involvement has been non-existent, which is surprising given his big-play abilities. Of his 32 career receptions, seven have gone for 40+ yards. Furthermore, five of his six touchdown catches have been of 40+ yards.
He's been involved in special teams though, and made a stellar play downing a punt at the 2-yard line against Florida. That kind of hustle and gamer mentality shows just how valuable he is to the Tigers. But Kelly's latest comments show that Hilton could soon be in line for a bigger role in the LSU passing game. Hopefully, that involvement turns into some big plays.
Hilton has appeared in 28 games with six starts in his LSU career, totaling 32 catches for 659 yards and six touchdowns. He missed most of the 2024 season with a lower leg injury, and in six games last season, collected nine catches for 243 yards and three touchdowns.
