LSU's Week 1 win over No. 4 Clemson propelled Brian Kelly's squad to the No. 3 spot in this week's AP Top 25 Poll. It's LSU's highest ranking since 2019, which has college football fans around the country talking about the Tigers' potential in 2025.
In the win, the LSU offense saw WR Destyn Hill leave the game with an injury after playing just two snaps. Kelly has provided an update on Hill's status, saying that he suffered a fractured hand that required surgery. But, Kelly doesn't expect Hill to miss that much time.
Destyn Hill fractures hand vs Clemson
According to Kelly, Hill had surgery on Monday that required a plate to be inserted into his hand. That seems like a significant obstacle in a return to play plan for a wide receiver, but Kelly is optimistic Hill won't be sidelined for long. He will officially miss this Saturday's contest against Louisiana Tech, but could return as soon as LSU's Week 3 SEC opener against Florida at Tiger Stadium.
"The plate stabilizes it to the point where we can put a cast on it that allows him to function as a wide receiver. Although disappointed that he won’t play this week, he’s pretty excited that he’ll get a chance to get back out on the field next week."Brian Kelly
Hill transferred to LSU after spending two seasons at Florida State, although he did not see any action in 2024 due to an injury. In 2023, Hill appeared in 10 games for Seminoles and brought in six catches for 87 yards.
Prior to the college ranks, Hill, a New Orleans native, shined at Edna Karr High School where he was rated as a consensus four-star recruit. According to 247Sports Composite, Hill was ranked as the No. 19 wide receiver in the country and the No. 5 player in Louisiana. He totaled 1,047 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 54 catches during his junior season, and collected 33 receptions for 806 yards and 15 touchdowns in his senior season.
Hill's college career has been plagued by injuries, but hopefully he is able to return to the field soon. Hill is a part of a deep WR room that saw four pass-catchers haul in at least five receptions against Clemson.
