In the new world of college athletics that features NIL and the transfer portal, jersey sponsorships are next on the horizon. Jersey sponsorship patches have become a common sight in professional leagues such as the NBA, NHL, and MLB, but they have yet to be seen on college jerseys. However, that is about to change.

Lane Kiffin and LSU remain firmly in the race for 5-star offensive prospect

LSU has been ahead of the curve when it comes to jersey sponsorships. Back in October, LSU inked a multimillion-dollar jersey sponsorship deal before such patches had even been approved by the NCAA. Details of the sponsorship were not revealed at the time, which left fans wondering who LSU had struck such a historic deal with.

In January, the NCAA officially approved the use of jersey patch sponsorships, which gives athletic departments a new avenue to generate revenue. On Monday, LSU revealed details of its historic jersey sponsorship deal and even gave a first look at what the patches will look like.

LSU Athletics announces historic partnership with Woodside Energy

In a significant milestone in the landscape of collegiate athletics, LSU has announced a multi-year first-of-its-kind jersey patch sponsorship with Woodside Energy. As the Official Legacy Partner of LSU Athletics, the Woodside Energy logo will appear on all 21 of LSU's competition apparel beginning in the 2026-27 season.

Woodside Energy is one of the largest independent oil and gas producers in Australia. The global energy company has been operating offshore Louisiana for nearly two decades, and is committed to building a legacy in Louisiana that transcends the energy industry. Earlier this year, Woodside Energy announced a $17.5 billion final investment decision on its Louisiana LNG project.

“This partnership with Woodside Energy represents a monumental step forward for LSU Athletics and our student-athletes,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Verge Ausberry. “LSU continues to set the standard and remains at the forefront of this new era of collegiate athletics, and we are excited to align athletic excellence with community impact through this historic collaboration.”

The jersey patches themselves are modest and feature two different versions of purple and gold lettering to match LSU's colors. The patches are not overpowering and don't take away from the aesthetic of the Tiger uniforms.

Sports fans of professional teams have seen some bad jersey patches that don't match the team's coloring and are too overwhelming, so it's nice to see that is not the case with the Woodside patches.

In addition to jersey patches, Woodside will have prominent signage at all LSU athletic venues as well as a diverse mix of marketing assets across all LSU sports channels. That means Tiger fans can expect to see Woodside marketing materials at Tiger Stadium, the PMAC, Alex Box Stadium, as well as other athletic venues around campus.
