Left-handed pitcher Cameron Johnson was a highly-touted prospect when he arrived in Baton Rouge for the 2024 season. Johnson was ranked as the No. 2 left-handed pitcher and No. 11 overall player nationally in the class of 2023 by Perfect Game, and began his LSU career with plenty of hype.
Kim Mulkey and LSU are poised to make a massive statement on the road at Texas
However, Johnson's LSU career was short-lived. The 6'5" lefty made 13 relief appearances for the Tigers in 2024, posting a 12.00 ERA and 2.33 WHIP over just 9.0 innings of work. He entered the transfer portal following the season and committed to the Oklahoma Sooners prior to the 2024 season.
Now entering his second season in Norman, expectations are high for Johnson once again. Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson has announced that Johnson will be OU's Opening Day starter next Friday, February 13 when the Sooners take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Former LSU pitcher Cam Johnson aims for more success at Oklahoma
Johnson appeared in 10 games and made seven starts in his first season with the Sooners in 2025. Much like his days in Baton Rouge, he struggled with control and handed out more walks than strikeouts. Johnson issued 16 walks with 13 strikeouts in his 9.0 innings with the Tigers in 2024, and then issued 25 walks with 24 strikeouts across 21.0 innings with the Sooners in 2025.
The former LSU pitcher enters his junior season at Oklahoma with a 7.50 ERA and 2.13 WHIP through 30.0 innings on the mound throughout his collegiate career. As he searches for more effectiveness and control of the strike zone, the Oklahoma staff has confidence in his abilities. With the Opening Day nod, Johnson figures to have a significant role in Oklahoma's pitching staff this season.
The Sooners went 38-22 last season, and posted a 14-16 record in SEC play during their first season in the conference.
Johnson is set to make a return to LSU with his new team when Oklahoma visits Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field to take on the Tigers from March 19-21. LSU swept Oklahoma in a three-game weekend series in Norman last season.
