A former LSU Tigers is getting another shot at playing in the NFL. On Tuesday, it was announced that the New Orleans Saints have signed former Tiger kicker Cade York following the release of Blake Grupe. York will join New Orleans' practice squad first, but figures to have a shot at claiming the starting job for the Saints.

The Saints released Grupe after a disappointing season in which he made only 69.2% of his kick attempts so far this season. That is the lowest mark in Saints franchise history since 1970 among New Orleans kickers with at least 25 attempts through the first 12 weeks of the season.

After a strong collegiate career with the Tigers, York was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 4th round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He went 32-of-34 on field goal attempts and 35-of-37 on extra points over 17 games during his rookie season in 2022. He has since spent time with the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Washington Commanders, and most recently, the Cincinnati Bengals.

So far through his NFL career, York is 33-of-45 (73.3%) on field goals and 51-of-54 on extra point attempts. After attempting 69 kicks with Cleveland in his rookie season, the McKenny, Texas native has tried just 30 kicks over the last three seasons. He gets a fresh start in New Orleans, and is looking to make the most of that opportunity.

York was the No. 1 kicker for the Tigers during their historic National Championship season in 2019. As a freshman, York converted 21 of his 27 field goal attempts en route to making the SEC All-Freshman Team, as well as being named to the All-SEC Second Team. He followed up his strong freshman season with an All-SEC sophomore season in which he was also named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2020. In total, York ended his LSU career going 56-for-66 (81.8%) on field goal attempts over three seasons with LSU from 2019-21. He also went 164-for-168 on extra point attempts.
