As Lane Kiffin continues to build his coaching staff for his first season in Baton Rouge, Frank Wilson's future is still up in the air. Wilson took over the LSU Football program as interim head coach following Brian Kelly's firing back on October 26, and is preparing the Tigers to battle the Houston Cougars in the Texas Bowl on December 27.
Frank Wilson announces that several key playmakers won't play in the Texas Bowl
Wilson is beloved and respected throughout the college football coaching world, and has played a key role during his time in Baton Rouge. He's coached over 40 Tigers that have gone on to play in the NFL, and has recruited some of LSU's most decorated players in program history, including Leonard Fournette, Tyrann Mathieu, La'el Collins, Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr.
Wilson is among the best recruiters in the country, and has been engrained in Louisiana football his entire life. He is a valuable asset to the Tigers, but Kiffin hasn't given him an update on what his future holds at LSU.

Frank Wilson deserves to be retained by Lane Kiffin
Given his recruiting pedigree, it would be advantageous for Kiffin to keep Wilson on his coaching staff in 2026. He was recognized as the nation's Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com in 2011, the Top Recruiter in College Football by NFL.com in 2014, and the SEC Recruiter of the Year by Scout.com in 2015. He was also acknowledged as the top assistant coach in the country in 2011.
Wilson brought elite talent to Baton Rouge in both of his tenures, and is extremely familiar with recruiting the state of Louisiana. Prior to coming to LSU in 2010, Wilson coached in the Louisiana high school ranks as an assistant coach at Edna Karr High School from 1997-2000 and the head coach at O. Perry Walker High School from 2001-03.
His other coaching stops include assistant positions at Ole Miss, Southern Miss, and Tennessee. He is in his second stint at LSU, first serving as the running backs coach from 2010-15. After holding head coaching positions at UTSA from 2016-19 and McNeese State from 2020-21, Wilson then returned to LSU to be Brian Kelly's associate head coach and running backs coach.
Wilson's resume speaks for itself, and he is beloved by both LSU players and the fan base. His recruiting knowledge is extremely valuable, and he also has head coaching experience. He's earned a chance to stay on board, yet Kiffin has yet to extend an offer. Tiger fans are hoping that comes soon.
