Fresh off of their weekend sweep of Oklahoma and their recent promotion to the third ranked team in the country, the LSU Baseball team took their eight game winning streak to Thibodeaux to face off against Nicholls State. While LSU dominated the first matchup, the Nicholls State Colonels came to play on Tuesday Night.
In the third inning, an error by LSU allowed a run to advance which allowed Nicholls State to jump out to a 1-0 lead on a single. In the fourth inning, Nicholls State put together another two out rally and this time a walk hurt LSU as Nicholls State would take a 3-0 lead on a two RBI double.
The LSU offense was quiet for the first six innings of the game as Nicholls State's pitching staff pieced together a perfect approach. Then in the 7th inning the game changed as some LSU fans may have had rally caps on while Jared Jones took a rally...
Daniel Dickinson got on with a one out walk followed by John Pearson who was able to get a pinch hit walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Ethan Frey came to the plate and delivered a pinch hit single to load the bases for Steven Milam who would drive home the Tigers first run of the game.
Jake Brown then finally brought LSU back to even with a two RBI single to left field knotting the score at 3-3.
Luis Hernandez would get hit by a pitch, loading the bases, and Chris Stanfield made Nicholls State pay with a two-RBI single that would give LSU a 5-3 lead, and the score would hold, giving LSU the win.
Conner Ware got the start for the Tigers in this game, and he turned in three innings of one-run baseball, allowing just one unearned run. Jaden Noot took over for Conner Ware and struggled, recording just two outs, allowing two hits, two walks, and two runs. Connor Benge came on for LSU and gave the Tigers 1.1 scoreless innings when LSU really needed to keep Nicholls off the scoreboard.
The MVP for LSU was True Freshman William Schmidt who was able to come on in the sixth and close out the game giving the Tigers four scoreless innings of relief with 8 strikeouts. Schmidt coming in the game when he did and shutting down Nicholls' offense was massive as it allowed LSU to apply the pressure on a night where the Tigers didn't have their A Game.
The Tigers now get a few days off as they'll travel to Auburn, Alabama to take on the 9th ranked Auburn Tigers.
