After a disappointing loss to start the day, the LSU Baseball team was back in action just a few hours later looking to pick up a second weekend series win to start the season. After failing to record a hit until the 8th inning all eyes were on the Tigers offense as LSU looked to finish the weekend with a win.
The Tigers got the scoring started early in this game as a Chris Stanfield safety squeeze put the Tigers up 1-0 in the second inning. In the third inning, Josh Pearson doubled down the left field line driving in Derek Curiel. In the fourth inning LSU struck again as a Tanner Reaves sac fly scored Steven Milam before a Jared Jones single scored a pair.
In the 6th inning, the Bear would strike again with an RBI double to left field which was followed by a past ball that scored Derek Curiel. Josh Pearson would add to his solid day driving in Jones on a groundout.
In his second start after Tommy John Surgery, Chase Shores continues to look like the pitcher who burst onto the scene as a Freshman. Shores was incredible for LSU pitching five scoreless innings allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out six lowering his season ERA to 0.90.
Following Chase Shores out of the bullpen was transfer Zac Cowan who gave Jay Johnson two hitless innings striking out three as his impressive start to the season continues.
In the bottom of the 7th inning the Tigers loaded the bases for Jared Jones who came through once again with a 2 RBI single to put LSU ahead 10-0. Dalton Beck got a chance to prove himself and he came up with a big RBI single to left field while advancing Mic Paul who'd score on a ball in the dirt making it 12-0.
As the Tigers took the lead Jay Johnson put Jacob Mayers on the mound and he struggled with his command walking two batters and hitting two as he kept missing inside but, he only allowed one run. In the ninth inning DJ Primeaux came in to get an out before Johnson brought on Jaden Noot to get the final two outs.
Jared Jones had his best game of the season going 3 for 5 at the plate with a double and five RBIs powering LSU's offense. Derek Curiel continues to be so impressive at the top of the lineup with a 2-3 day at the plate while drawing a walk scoring every time he got on base. Steven Milam had a much needed great game at the plate going 3-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored in the win.
The Tigers now have a busy upcoming week as they'll face Nicholls on Monday before heading to Houston for the College Baseball Series and then to Frisco for the Frisco College Baseball Classic.
