The start of a new college baseball season has Tiger fans everywhere fired up. After winning two National Championships over the last three seasons, the LSU Baseball program is poised for another title run in 2026. Jay Johnson retained several key players from last season and brought in several transfers who are already making an impact in the new campaign.

LSU opened the new season with a convincing sweep over Milwaukee at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers swept the Panthers by scores of 15-5 (F/8), 5-3, and 21-7 (F/7) to start the new season 3-0. The bats erupted for a monstrous weekend, but it was the pitching staff that made history.

The Tiger pitching staff dominated all weekend long. LSU pitchers struck out 49 hitters over the weekend, which set a program record for most strikeouts in a three-game series.

In an eight-inning opening game, 17 of LSU's 24 outs came via strikeout. Casan Evans got the party started by collecting seven strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work as Friday's Opening Day starter. Cooper Williams then recorded five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief before Gaving Guidry also collected five strikeouts over 2.0 innings of work.

In Game 2 on Saturday, Cooper Moore put together an impressive performance that saw him rack up 11 strikeouts and zero walks over 6.0 innings of work. In relief, Mavrick Rizy totaled three strikeouts, Zac Cowan collected two, and Dax Dathe had one of his own.

The Tigers needed just seven innings to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon, but the pitching staff still collected 15 punch outs. Starter William Schmidt racked up nine over 4.0 innings, with Sanitago Garcia getting his lone out via the strikeout. Then, both of Devin Sheerin's outs came on strikeouts as well, with Marcos Paz collecting three strikeouts over 2.0 innings of work.

In total, nearly two thirds of the outs LSU pitchers recorded over the weekend came via strikeouts. Specifically, 49 of the 72 outs (68%) LSU found were from strikeouts.

LSU has a quick turnaround following the weekend sweep of Milwaukee, as Kent State visits Alex Box Stadium for a Monday night matchup. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. CT.
