The college basketball transfer portal has significantly slowed down as teams are making final additions around the edges to complete their rosters. As the transfer portal activity slows down, college coaches will turn their focus toward high school recruiting as the summer travel season is set to heat up.
The LSU Basketball program is coming off of a recruiting cycle where the Tigers signed the nation's 24th ranked recruiting class. As Matt McMahon is now operating with a higher NIL budget, this recruiting class could be Matt McMahon's best high school class to date if the staff chooses to take that approach. As the recruiting cycle gets close to heating up, LSU's coaching staff is getting back out on the road looking to build relationships.
LSU Basketball visits elite Center recruit Sam Funches
On Wednesday, LSU's coaching staff took a trip to Mississippi to visit elite center recruit Sam Funches at his practice.
Sam Funches is a player the LSU Basketball staff has been recruiting for over a year and the Tigers have been able to get him on campus several times. While LSU was in early on Funches so were Mississippi State, Indiana, UNC, Texas, Ole Miss, and others which will make this a tough recruitment to win out in.
On3's Industry Recruiting Rankings rank Funches as a 4-star recruit as the 39th ranked player in the Country, the 3rd ranked center in the class, and the top player out of Mississippi.
The LSU Basketball team will likely need to add at least one center in this class, if not a pair of centers. Jalen Reed is entering his 4th season and it could be his final year in Baton Rouge if it goes well. The transfer portal is always something that needs to be accounted for as well as the Tigers saw this offseason.
