One of the newest trends this season has emerged as College Football programs around the Country have started to move away from playing their spring games. The concern for these programs is that the game will be a showcase of young emerging talent to be lured into the transfer portal taking away promising players and key depth pieces.
Matt Rhule at Nebraska was the first to cancel the team's Spring Game after he saw programs tamper following their game last season. From there, Alabama, Florida State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and Texas, along with tons of other programs, have joined in the trend, canceling their Spring Games.
On Friday, Brian Kelly and the LSU Football program joined in on the trend canceling the Spring Game instead opting for an open practice in Tiger Stadium with an Autograph Session to follow.

On one end of the spectrum, the decision makes a ton of sense as LSU is hoping to compete for a bid to the College Football Playoff, and the last thing you'd want is to lose a player that could contribute to the transfer portal. At the end of the day, the Spring Game is mostly for the fans and the team is still giving the fans a great event to attend.
On the other side of the argument, taking away a game like scenario for the players over fears of the transfer portal is a disappointment. If a program is basing their evaluations of a player off of a scrimmage, it's likely a program that isn't going to fare well as its not the best way to evaluate players. The Spring Game gave players the chance to prove themselves and potentially work their way up the depth chart but, the coaches also get 15 practices to judge the players.
It's disappointing to see another change to the sport as College Football continues to change but, if we eventually get to a model where there's only one transfer window we could see the game return.
