LSU's defensive front is emerging as one of the best in the Country
The LSU defense has been leaps and bounds better than the group we saw take the field in 2023. A ton of credit belongs on the new defensive staff starting with the play caller Blake Baker who has called a few incredible games this year. The players have all clrealy taken a massive step forward and that credit belongs on the positional coaches.
The two coaches that deserve the most credit are Bo Davis and Kevin Peoples as the defensive line has become a strength for this team after it was a weakness this offseason. In 2023, LSU only had 31 sacks a number which we'll see crushed this year as the Tigers already have 21 sacks in six games.
The Tigers rank second the SEC in sacks while ranking fifth Nationally behind Boise State, San Diego State, and Texas State who have all played an inferior level of talent and Ole Miss who has played an extra game. The Tigers are averaging 3.50 sacks per game with their sacks accounting for 139 yards.
Sai'Vion Jones and Bradyn Swinson deserve a ton of credit for the defensive lines emergence as the edge rushers have combined for 11.5 sacks. The duo have taken a massive step under Kevin Peoples' coaching with Swinson emerging as a potential first round pick.
The defense has also found ways to beat opposing offensive lines via great play calling and schemes. Blake Baker has blitzed Major Burns, Whit Weeks, Sage Ryan, and Jardin Gilbert accounting for 4.5 sacks.
Bo Davis was given a tougher job than everyone coaching a group of inexperienced defensive tackles paired with transfers and true freshmen. The job only got tougher after they Tigers lost Jacobian Guillory for the season yet, LSU has gotten 4.5 sacks out of their interior defensive linemen.
Winning these games starts up front for LSU
As LSU deals with an inexperienced secondary the Tigers need to continue to pressure the opposing quarterback. The Tigers constantly pressured Jaxson Dart in the Ole Miss game winning LSU the game as the Rebels couldn't hit on the big play. If LSU is going to compete for the College Football Playoff and an SEC Title the defensive front will need to keep its pressure on the opposing quarterback.
