The LSU Tigers have attacked the transfer portal and have acted like a program hungry to go out and make a run in 2025. The lone position of need the Tigers haven't been able to address is safety which is massive need for the Tigers. LSU will lose Major Burns and Sage Ryan who've played a ton for the Tigers during their tenures.
In the Texas Bowl, LSU started Javien Toviano and Jardin Gilbert at safety while DaShawn Spears played a ton. Based on how that game played out, the position that you feel the worst about is safety as the Tigers were gashed by the Baylor passing attack.
The majority of the safeties in the transfer portal have already committed to schools but, the Tigers are likely eyeing safeties from top programs. The team's the Tigers are most likely eyeing additions from are in the College Football Playoff. After every team's bowl game a five day window opens where players can enter the transfer portal.
When you look at the teams that lost in the second round of the College Football Playoff, Boise State, Arizona State, and Oregon have lost while either Georgia or Notre Dame will join them. If you're looking for a starting caliber SEC safety, the programs you're likely looking at are Oregon and whoever loses on Thursday Night.
There's also the possibility that players from Non-Playoff teams use the 5 Day window after their Bowl Game but, thus far there hasn't been a ton of action.
The Ducks will most likely lose their two starting safeties depending on whether or not Kobe Savage is able to get a waiver. This makes landing one of the Ducks safeties difficult as they're all likely in contention for a starting role or serious playing time.
The more attractive teams to look at are whoever loses between Georgia and Notre Dame as both teams are loaded at safety and are playing some young pieces at the position already.
If LSU is forced to wait another week, it may not be the worst thing as they may be able to then pursue safeties from the loser of matchups between Texas and Ohio State as well as Georgia/Notre Dame and Penn State.
The loser between Texas and Ohio State will have a ton of intriguing pieces for LSU at safety if they hit the transfer portal while the same could be said to a lesser extent from the other matchup.
It'll be interesting to see just how many safeties hit the transfer portal in the days to come as Non-Playoff teams could have some entries but, LSU desperatley needs to add atleast on body while two would be the most ideal heading into the Spring.
