This weekend, the LSU Baseball team started its season off on the right note, picking up three wins over the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons. The Tigers absolutely dominated the Mastodons winning the weekend 32-2 while the pitching staff struck out 45 batters this weekend which is the most in a series since 1992.
After Opening Weekend, there wasn't much of a change and the LSU Tigers stood pat in the Three Top National Polls:
- Baseball America: #2
- Perfect Game: #2
- D1 Baseball #3
Texas A&M remains the Nation's consensus top team after sweeping Elon in the first season of the year. Virginia is the only other team ahead of LSU in the D1 Baseball poll after a 2-1 weekend losing to Michigan but, beating Villanova and Xavier.
This week LSU's schedule will start to pick up but, the opponents still won't be a massive threat to LSU. The Tigers will play five games this week opening the week against Southern before the first road game at Nicholls State before finishing the week with three games against Nebraska-Omaha.
While LSU continues to work its way into form, Jay Johnson will continue to experiment with the roster and his pitching staff. After seeing the weekend starters, the two weekday games should allow Jay Johnson to see Connor Ware on the mound as well as another starter as he looks to evaluate the rest of his staff.
The lineup isn't fully set either as LSU still has several players battling for more at bats after the Opening Weekend. Ashton Larson made the most out of his at bats after not starting the first game going 4 for 6 at the plate with 7 RBIs and will look for more playing time. Transfers Daniel Dickinson and Chris Stanfield were the stars of the weekend and will look to stay at the top of LSU's order.
Given how massive LSU's leads were, Jay Johnson didn't need to deploy any of his high leverage relievers but, it'll be interesting to see who Johnson turns to if LSU is in a close game this weekend.
