Under Brian Kelly, while the LSU Football team has had incredible high flying offenses, the defenses have been abysmal at best. While the 2024 defense wasn't the best, it was far improved compared to the unit we saw from LSU in Brian Kelly's first two seasons. When everyone poses the question of how LSU didn't make the College Football Playoff with Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers, and Brian Thomas Jr, the answer is Matt House.

When Brian Kelly took the LSU Head Coaching gig he hired Matt House from the Kansas City Chiefs as House went from Linebackers Coach to Defensive Coordinator. The 2023 season was one of the worst defensive showings by an LSU defense as the Tigers allowed 28 points per game and 400+ yards per game.

During the 2023 season, LSU's defense allowed 30 or more points 8 times, 40 or more points twice, and allowed 55 points in a loss to Ole Miss. After the season, Brian Kelly fired his entire defensive staff turning to Missouri's Blake Baker to lead the defense.

After spending the season as the Jacksonville Jaguars Linebackers Coach where the entire staff was fired once again, House is headed back to Kansas City as Andy Reid has brought him back as a Senior Defensive Assistant.

House returns to veteran defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's staff for his third tenure with Spagnuolo and his second tenure with the Chiefs. It's unclear what Matt House's role with the team will be but, it may become clearer if the Chiefs lose any of their assistants to roles with another staff.

It'll be interesting to see if House is able to work his way back up the coaching ranks and if he's able to get another coordinator job either at the NFL or College level.
