The LSU Basketball team has transformed over the past week, as Matt McMahon and his staff have completely retooled the roster using the transfer portal. While LSU may not be done in the transfer portal, the Tigers have done an incredible job early on building out the roster bringing in five players that will all impact the game in different ways. Thus far, the additions have all given the Tigers faithful a ton to be excited about heading into 2025.
The player LSU fans should be most excited to see donning the Purple and Gold is UNLV transfer Dedan Thomas Jr. The Tigers get a Top-15 player overall in the transfer portal in to the program to run the offense which is a player LSU typically can't get unless he has ties to LSU but, the Tigers new NIL commitment paid off. Matt McMahon spoke on what Dedan Thomas Jr adds to LSU's roster and why the staff jumped on the chance to bring him into the program.
"Dedan is a creative and skilled point guard who makes everyone around him better. We love his ability to orchestrate the offense, get into the paint off the bounce, and shoot the ball from behind the 3-point arc. His vision on the court, unselfishness, and ability to throw the lob pass are fun to watch. I am really excited about his passion for player development and the opportunity to play at LSU. We cannot wait for his arrival on campus this summer."Matt McMahon
The Tigers' first transfer portal addition came in the form of a massive 6 foot 10 center with SEC experience, nabbing Mississippi State's starting Center, Michael Nwoko. The Tigers needed to add a physical forward with size to help defend the rim and Nwoko gives the team a true center that will have the chance to start for LSU. Matt McMahon spoke on what drew LSU to Michael Nwoko and how he fits with the team's needs.
"He is an athletic and versatile forward who plays with a physicality and toughness. Michael will provide a presence finishing plays, scoring in the post, rebounding the ball at a high level and shot blocking ability. We look forward to his arrival on campus this summer."Matt McMahon
Looking to add size on the wings, LSU went out and landed an exciting guard, Rashad King, who can play shooting guard, replacing Cam Carter. The Tigers needed to add three level scorers alongside Dedan Thomas Jr, and Rashad King will be the benefactor of Thomas's ability to draw attention from the defense, as King will get a ton of open looks. McMahon spoke about what LSU liked in King's game while speaking about his character and leadership.
"We love Rashad’s 6-6 frame at the guard position. He scored the ball at all 3-levels this season, was excellent on the defensive glass, and also showcased his playmaking and defensive abilities. I love the character and leadership he will bring to the program. We look forward to his arrival in Baton Rouge."Matt McMahon
The most interesting addition comes as LSU adds Portland wing Max Mackinnon who hails from Australia. Mackinnon is a wing with size who has exciting playmaking ability, scoring upside, and the ability to knock down the three consistently. Matt McMahon gave insight into what LSU liked and the position he may play.
"We are excited to add the shooting, skill level and experience that Max Mackinnon will bring to our team. At 6 foot 6, he can space the floor from ‘3’ and is a proven playmaker with his passing ability. We look forward to Max’s arrival on campus this summer."Matt McMahon
The Tigers' latest addition is one of the most exciting, as LSU landed Omaha forward Marquel Sutton, who brings a ton of scoring ability to a team that needs it. At Omaha, Sutton showed the athletic ability to play in the SEC, and his ability to impact the game near the rim and on the glass will be a welcome addition for the Tigers. Matt McMahon spoke on the importance of adding Sutton and the veteran presence he'll bring.
"We love the addition of Marquel Sutton to our program. He is a high energy, versatile forward who plays with relentless effort on the court. Marquel is a strong finisher around the rim, skilled on the perimeter, and will impact our rebounding needs. We are excited to add an experienced winner and college graduate to our roster."Matt McMahon
