The overhaul of LSU's defense remains the top priority for Brian Kelly and his coaching staff as the Tigers look to field a defense that meets the program standard. After landing the Nation's top defensive line transfer, the Tigers have shifted their focus to the top safety in the transfer portal zeroing in on Houston transfer AJ Haulcy. For a player of AJ Haulcy's caliber it's never an easy recruitment to win out in and the LSU Football team's biggest foe is the Miami Hurricanes.
The Miami Hurricanes got to host AJ Haulcy on an official visit Tuesday night and to say the Hurricanes rolled out the red carpet would be an understatement. Haulcy got picked up and received a police escort reportedly riding around Miami with Hurricanes Head Coach Mario Cristobal.
Later on in his visit, AJ Haulcy got to meet rapper and Miami Hurricanes fan Rick Ross sharing the moment on social media.
The Hurricanes biggest recruiting asset may not be the City or its celebrities but, the Hurricanes position coach. This offseason the Hurricanes hired Houston defensive backs coach Zac Ethridge to fill the same role with Miami giving the team the best connection to Haulcy.
Why LSU Still Has a Shot to Land AJ Haulcy
While Miami clearly has the inside track with AJ Haulcy it's hard to rule the Tigers out in this recruitment. For starters, Haulcy initially revealed he was going to announce a commitment on Monday which hasn't happened yet, as it gets late into the afternoon on Wednesday. The longer Haulcy goes without committing to Miami, the better LSU's chances are at making a run.
The LSU Football team has showed this year that it is willing and able to win out in massive transfer battles and Brian Kelly and his staff may make a move once again. All indications are that LSU is on paper a College Football Playoff contender while Miami still may have a ton of work to do. If the Tigers can get AJ Haulcy on campus it'll be massive for the Tigers chances as Haulcy is ranked as the top safety in the transfer portal and the 31st best player to transfer this year.
This season at Houston Haulcy racked up 74 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 7 pass defenses for the Cougars.
