Paul Skenes picks up a massive honor winning the National League Rookie of the Year
The last two years for Paul Skenes resemble a fairy tale as it has been an incredible ride for the hard throwing righty. Paul Skenes and LSU took home the 2023 College Baseball National Championship with Skenes taking home the Dick Hauser Trophy and the National Pitcher of the Year Award. His college success led to him being selected first overall in the MLB Draft and less than a year after being drafted he made his MLB Debut.
Skenes had an incredible Rookie Season finishing the year with a 1.96 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, striking out 170 batters, walking just 32 batters, and finished 11-3 in 23 starts. The successful year has resulted in Skenes winning his first Major Accolade as a pro as he was named the National League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year.
By the look on Skenes face when he found out he won the Award, you would've guessed that he lost the award.
Paul Skenes won the Award receiving 23 of 30 first place votes and 7 second place votes with all of the first and second place votes going to Skenes and Padres Outfielder Jackson Merrill. LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson fired off two tweets one calling Skenes One of One and the other saying he's just getting started.
Paul Skenes may be in line for one more Award
While winning the Rookie of the Year is a massive accomplishment as you only have one shot at it, Paul Skenes may have a shot at winning an even bigger award in year one. Skenes is one of three finalists for the Cy Young Award along with Chris Sale and Zach Wheeler. Winning the Cy Young as a Rookie would give Skenes an All Star start, the Rookie of the Year Award, and a Cy Young in one season which would be a massive welcome to the show.
