Portal losses one year later: Which former LSU Tigers impressed or disappointed at new stops?
As December moves along, we're watching the LSU Football team gain impact players while players leave the program via the transfer portal. When a bunch of players hit the transfer portal its easy for many to panic and wonder what's wrong but, often times the players wouldn't have played for LSU. When you look at how everyone played that left the LSU Football program, there aren't many players you wish you had back.
Logan Diggs - Running Back - Ole Miss
After leading LSU's running back room with 653 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns on 119 carries, Logan Diggs made the decision to transfer to Ole Miss. Logan Diggs has spent the entire season recovering from the injury he suffered late in the year last season and hasn't played yet. As Ole Miss has struggled to find a consistent rushing attack, Diggs could've been a massive factor for the Rebels.
Jaxon Howard - Edge Rusher - Minnesota
After spending his true Freshman season at LSU, Jaxon Howard transferred to Minnesota to move close to home. This season, Howard didn't play much recording just 8 tackles but, he should see more playing time as he develops.
Denver Harris - Cornerback - UTSA
After issues at Texas A&M and LSU, Denver Harris badly needed a fresh start and returned home playing for UTSA to get that fresh start. This season, Harris has played a ton racking up 15 tackles and 3 pass deflections, we're glad to see Harris is turning it around.
Lance Heard - Offensive Tackle - Tennessee
The path to a starting role was blocked for Lance Heard as LSU had to replace Center Charles Turner coming into the season. That decision led Heard to Tennessee where he's started at left tackle when healthy and continues to improve each week showing some flaws as can be expected as a first time starter in the SEC.
Quency Wiggins - Defensive Line - Colorado
After spending two seasons at LSU, the Baton Rouge Native transferred out West to Colorado to play for Deion Sanders. Wiggins didn't play much on a reloaded Colorado defensive line but, he recorded 3 tackles on the season.
Jalen Brown - Wide Receiver - Florida State
After Redshirting his freshman season at LSU where he appeared in three games, Jalen Brown opted to return home transferring to Florida State. The Homecoming didn't go as expected in year one as Brown caught just 8 passes for 75 yards but, to be fair, no one had a good season in Florida State's offense.
Jackson McGohan - Tight End - Wisconsin
Jackson McGohan didn't play much this season catching just one pass for two yards but, he should continue to see his role increase next season.
Duce Chestnut - Cornerback - Syracuse
After spending the first two years of his career at Syracuse, Chestnut transferred to LSU where he played sparingly recording 6 tackles and an interception. This offseason, Chestnut transferred back to Syracuse to play for Fran Brown and had a solid season finishing the year with 56 tackles, 5 pass deflections, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception.
Laterrance Welch - Cornerback - Arizona State
The Lafayette Native transferred after two seasons at LSU heading West to play for Kenny Dillingham at Arizona State. Welch had his best season yet with a massive pick six that helped Arizona State make the playoff but, he's back in the transfer portal after being dismissed from the team.
Marlon Martinez - Offensive Line - Mississippi State
As LSU's offensive line was all but set, Marlon Martinez entered the transfer portal heading to Mississippi State for his senior season. Martinez played in 11 games for the Bulldogs starting 10 of them splitting time between guard and tackle on both sides of the offensive line. Martinez would've likely only played at LSU when there were injuries on the offensive line so its hard to fault him for going where he could play his senior season.
Tygee Hill - Defensive Line - Oregon State
Tygee Hill transferred to Oregon State for his Sophomore season but, didn't play much recording just 2 tackles.
Tre Bradford - Running Back - Grambling State
This offseason Tre Bradford transferred to Grambling State reuniting with former LSU coach Mickey Joseph. On the season, Bradford rushed for 377 yards and 5 touchdowns on 98 carries while catching ten passes for 74 yards.
Armoni Goodwin - Running Back - UAB
After two seasons at LSU, Armoni Goodwin transferred back home to the State of Alabama transferring to UAB. This season was actually a step back for Goodwin as he rushed for 88 yards on 14 carries after picking up 267 yards for LSU in 2022.
LSU hardly lost anyone that's making the Tigers miss them
Overall, when you look at what everyone has done at their new schools, LSU made out perfectly fine with these players leaving. Ideally, you'd like to still have Lance Heard to replace Will Campbell or Emery Jones, Jackson McGohan as LSU's tight end room needs to be rebuilt, and Jaxon Howard as an option at edge rusher. The portal is a part of the game and for the most part, LSU only lost one SEC Caliber player.
