Alabama loses in a historic upset on a wild Saturday blowing the SEC race wide open
When we wrote out weekend rooting guide this weekend we noted that this weekend didn't have a ton of ranked matchups which is usually when chaos happens to rise up. When we wrote that preview one upset we didn't bother including was the potential that Vanderbilt could beat Alabama as it seemed impossible.
Well, we certainly messed that one up as Vanderbilt beat the Tide 40-35 in a game where the Tide never seemed like the better team. After beating Georgia, Alabama seemed like a lock for the SEC Championship as there weren't many tests on their schedule.
Another team that seemed in great position for the College Football Playoff was Missouri as they had a lighter schedule. When Missouri played Texas A&M today, they got absolutely dominated from start to finish in the type of loss that will weigh heavily in the minds of the College Football Playoff committee.
Now, the only teams left undefeated in SEC play are Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, and the LSU Tigers.
If you're a team like LSU or Texas A&M who opened the season with a backbreaking loss the events of the past two weekends have given your chances at making the College Football Playoff new life. The path to the SEC Championship Game just opened up for everyone in the conference and winning the Conference is massive as it guarantees you a bid in the Playoff.
This year may be the most wide open playoff race we'll see
The College Football Playoff expanding made this season more intriguing as every team was seemingly in contention as long as they had one or two losses. Now as some of the Nation's top ten teams have suffered losses we could see chaos down the stretch of this season. Even the teams that haven't been tested like Oregon, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Texas among other all have massive matchups upcoming.
