One of if not the biggest question heading into the offseason for LSU was figuring out who was going to lead this team in the secondary specifically at cornerback. LSU was killed defensively last year as the group consistently gave up the big play when it needed a stop the most.

As a true freshman last season, Stamps started four games including LSU's final three games of the season which were all wins. Stamps finished the season with 17 solo tackles and two pass deflections making himself one of the names to watch at camp.

Thus far at camp, Ashton Stamps has made it clear that he's the teams top cornerback and potentially one of the best in the country. Nearly every practice this off-season, everyone has come away from the day talking about how impressive Stamps has looked. This preseason, Stamps has picked off Garrett Nussmeier twice adding several pass break ups.

The impressive thing is that Stamps is doing this against the first team offense guarding elite weapons like Kyren Lacy and Mason Taylor.

The other key part is that he now looks the part changing to the number one while also adding on weight as he's now up to 190 pounds. Having Stamps as a solid contributor at one cornerback spot will lift a ton of questions about this defense as LSU has several options to play opposite of him.

The defense needs to get back to forcing turnovers in 2024

In 2023, LSU forced just 14 turnovers which ranked 112th in the Nation while the ten interceptions ranked 81st. If LSU is going to take a massive jump defensivley it starts with forcing more turnovers. This is easier said than done but, if Harold Perkins can return to being a game wrecker while the secondary continues to grow then we could see LSU's defense return to being fierce.
